In an effort to manage litter in our conservancy area we focus on two aspects:
- Education to change the behaviour of people to stop to litter and
- The physical management of litter next to our roads.
The education aspect is covered in our educational projects at local schools. We are also working with the local municipality to provide bins at our schools that make provision for the recycling of different types of refuse. The kids are then exposed from a young age to the importance of recycling.
The bulk of litter next to our roads comes from packaging material used in conjunction with food. To manage this litter, one should educate the road users to stop littering and to pick up the results of this bad behaviour, next to our roads. We also work with the local municipality to provide more bins next to our roads. We encourage all landowners with public roads next to their properties, to clean up the road verges at least once a month.
Below is a picture of bins we managed to place close to Balgowan railway station, next to road R103.
